FIGURATIVE DESIGN: Redesigning Light

An intuitive approach to using the white of the paper.

Replicating the natural light source as seen in photo references is often done for good reason.  Some images are so stunning that the artist is highly stimulated to paint the scene as it is.  If the artist was tasked, however, with redesigning the light for the sake of a story or mood, what might that look like? To go a step further, what would it look like if the white of the paper was used as a design tool; to focus attention, direct the action, balance or off-balance the composition, or promote contrast?
